On Wednesday evening in the City Hall, the Markthal won the Rotterdam Architecture Award 2015. As part of a three year cycle, which also includes transformations and commercial buildings, this years prize had a particular focus on housing.
The jury decided that the Markthal, which contains 228 apartments, was the undisputed winner of the award. ´An unprecedented project that allows a completely new typology was invented.` The jury was quoted as saying. ´The Markthal contributes great value to the housing supply from Rotterdam. Come to live with market functions, shops and restaurants in a festive buildings with undisputed iconic value. It is an asset for the city.`
The award was organised by AIR, the Rotterdam architecture centre, who host the award with the goal to raise the standard of architecture within the city and to create an identity for Rotterdam, by highlighting the cohesion of the urban fabric and the liveliness of the city.
