MVRDV has designed a new carpet for Dutch manufacturer Carpet Sign as part of their limited-edition FREEDOM collection. The carpets will be launched next week at the Milan Design Week in an exhibition hosted by Alcova on the Via Popoli Uniti, alongside 8 other designs by a selection of Dutch designers and artists.

The idea of the FREEDOM collection was to showcase the possibilities of Carpet Sign’s production facilities with the simple brief to design a rug within the boundaries of the production, but try at the same time to push the limits of the possibilities. MVRDV’s design took a sustainable approach to the production process, creating a system that uses the leftover threads from the production of other carpets to produce a patchwork of different colours and textures in the form of carpet puzzle pieces.

For the prototype displayed at Milan Design Week, these leftover threads came from the 8 other prototype carpets designed as part of the FREEDOM collection by Irma Boom, Joep van Lieshout, Sabine Marcelis, Studio Makkink & Bey, Christien Meindertsma, Jólan van der Wiel, Richard Hutten, and Wim Bos. The result is a carpet made of 12 individual puzzle pieces that the user can rearrange into endless unique configurations.
