MVRDV Director Asia Steven Smit is invited by East China Architectural Design & Research Institute to speak on September 25, at the 4th Summit on Tall Buildings and High-Density Core Area Development and Renewal. Steven Smit’s topic is Future Proof Hybrid Urbanism.

MVRDV has always pioneered radical urban scenarios to fit the uniquely challenging Asian context. Vanke 3D City in Shenzhen is an example of MVRDV Vertical Hybrid Urbanism that has grown out of the MVRDV ‘Three-dimensional City’ and ‘Vertical Village’ research projects. The objective is to create maximum vibrancy and livability in the Future City. New types of skyscrapers are required to create new 3D networks of spatial experiences. Humanity is now also at a pivot point in history. MVRDV expects that in the coming decade, with urbanization speeding up, increased technical, virtual and ecological agency will demand big shifts in human behavior. MVRDV investigates new types of hybrid relationships between the man-made technological and the natural. MVRDV explores this fusion between the natural and the synthetic in the Tencent Campus in Shenzhen. The project investigates a horizontal hybrid urbanism that allows the smart city to also be the green city, with ubiquitous smart city elements where employees feel enveloped by technology while literally surrounded by and in tune with nature.
