Gijs Rikken, Associate Design Director of MVRDV, is speaking on Thursday 5th September during the event Greening the City. The focus of the event taking place at De Zwijger in Amsterdam is about the economic and ecological value of green space in the built environment. Green not only contributes to a pleasant living environment, but also plays an important and functional role when it comes to rich urban biodiversity, cooling the city and limiting noise pollution.
Nevertheless, we see green space more often as a side issue than as the main issue. With a worldwide dramatic loss of biodiversity, increasing drought and extreme rainfall, our ecosystem is out of balance. What is the economic and ecological value of green space in the built environment? And how does this contribute to the broad prosperity of the Netherlands?
