Making MVRDV’s bold, innovative architecture requires us to push the limits of technological possibilities. As a group of in-house specialists, MVRDV NEXT develops and implements computational workflows and new technologies. Through a mixture of project-based work and standalone research, they rationalize designs, speed up processes and make projects more efficient and adaptable in the face of change. Designer Boudewijn Thomas, who is part of the NEXT studio, is going to speak about the bridge between research and practice at the 9th Daylight Symposium on November 15. He will also elaborate on Solarscape, a tool NEXT developed to visualise the buildable volume within a city without compromising access to sunlight.
Boudewijn Thomas is a computational design specialist and project leader within MVRDV NEXT - the office’s new experimental technologies group. He researches, develops, and integrates new technologies and digital workflows in MVRDV projects. Leveraging his passion for both digital and architectural design, Boudewijn has been involved in such groundbreaking designs as Valley in Amsterdam, in which he helped world-renowned engineering experts, ARUP, automate and generate the building’s complex façade tiling pattern, drawing more than 40.000 tiles over 10.000 m2 of façade surface with speed, accuracy, and efficiency.
A well-rounded designer, he completed his architectural studies at TU Delft, interned in Shanghai, and plays guitar in a band, combining his expertise in digital design with sports, travel, and music. Fueled by this diverse experience, Boudewijn has ambition to apply new technologies in the design process for both himself and his fellow architects, taking a leap into the future of what it means to design.
The Daylight Symposium is a biennial conference organised by the VELUX Group that brings together researchers, architects, and others with a professional interest in the role and importance of daylight for creating healthy and resilient buildings. Boudewijn Thomas will give a short presentation and have a short panel debate afterwards with Louis Becker from Henning Larsen.
