Jan Knikker to discuss the possibilities of rooftop use at Hamburg Roof Festival

In modern cities, large areas of unused flat roofs are waiting for a new function. That has to change. The roofs offer the space to address the housing shortage, energy transition, climate adaptation, and inclusiveness in cities. Would you like to find out more on the possibilities of our urban roof tops? Join Jan Knikker in Hamburg on September 18 as part of the exhibition ‘’SIMPLE GREEN - Greening the City’’ and the Hamburg Rooftop Festival, where he discusses adding more greenery and other solutions for unused rooftops. He will be joined by urban planner Franz-Josef Hoeing and Senator Jens Kerstan.

As Partner and Director of Strategy at MVRDV, Knikker drives Business Development and Public Relations efforts, spearheading a large and dynamic studio that also includes the office’s visualization capacity. He further leads the office’s branding efforts, and MVRDV’s expansion into new markets, by supporting the office’s ambition to generate solutions to global challenges through a multifaceted approach to architecture and urbanism.

The exhibition "SIMPLE GREEN - Greening the City" addresses the possibilities and opportunities of plants on buildings. It is aimed at architects as well as at all interested parties and provides answers to the most frequently asked questions - from greening existing buildings to greening new buildings, from savings through green buildings to financial subsidies and from practical tips on choosing plants to ecological effects on the urban climate . International, national and Hamburg examples of building greening will be presented. This is an exhibition by the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt and the AIT ArchitekturSalon in Hamburg in cooperation with BUKEA, the Ministry for the Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

The event is part of the first Hamburg Rooftop Festival, which is an initiative from the top city to draw attention to the diverse potential of roof uses in our everyday lives. Young and old have a weekend to discover Hamburg from above and get to know new urban spaces.
