Stavros Gargaretas on Growing City Densities in Europe

How do we successfully grow city densities in Europe?

Densification in Europe has historically been interpreted in different ways. With densification through height now occurring not only in some of Europe's economic capitals, but in smaller and growing cities across the continent, the question of how we successfully grow city densities becomes ever more important. At the CTBUH Europe Conference 2024 on 18 April, associate and architect Stavros Gargaretas will present "Downtown One and the Tirana Collection", through which he'll address the topic with reference to MVRDV's range of projects in Albania's capital city.

Stavros Gargaretas is an associate/Architect at MVRDV and Researcher at The Why Factory (T?F), a global think tank led by Winy Maas Since joining MVRDV in 2015, he has been leading projects of various scales in different cultural contexts. From competitions for new philharmonics, high density housing projects in India, to mixed use masterplans in Thailand. More recently his focus has shifted to Albania and the Middle East where he leads MVRDV projects in multiple phases. With the Why Factory, at TU Delft and CTU Prague, Stavros focuses on education and research, analysing and envisioning scenarios for future cities.
