How is MVRDV Striving to Harness AI within the Design Process?

As part of the Politecnico di Torino's DASP ACC Lecture series, on 18 April Fredy Fortich will attempt to answer this question by delving into MVRDV as a data-driven design practice, starting with its historical foundations through to MVRDV NEXT's current research on AI.  Fortich will unfold the current applications of image-based MVRDV AI across our various design stages, including brainstorming, reference research, conceptualisation, collage design, massing, materialisation, and rendering. Finally, the practice's own innovation in AI customisation will be unveiled.

The following day Fortich will join a panel at the Biennale Tecnologica on "Building the future: Artificial Intelligence from Theory to Practice", alongside Daniel Cardoso Llach, Associate Professor of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University, moderator Edoardo Bruno, and three further panellists. Starting with the project "Architectural Practice and Artificial Intelligence", the debate will focus on how architectural practices are beginning to explore the potential of AI in their practice, and the challenges and opportunities that await in this emerging field.

Fredy Fortich is an Architect and Engineer, specializing in computational design: BIM coordination, performance-based design, generative design, and machine learning methods. He holds an MSc in Building Technology from TU Delft and a Master of Architecture from Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá. He is a Technical Architect, serving simultaneously as BIM Manager at MVRDV’s French Studio as well as AI Researcher on Diffusion Models for MVRDV NEXT.
