On 24 September, Partner and Architect Frans de Witte will present The Canyon at Mission Rock at the CTBUH 2024 International Conference in London. An Award of Excellence winner in the categories of Best Tall Building under 100 metres and Best Tall Building in the Americas, The Canyon is one of four that form the first phase of the new Mission Rock neighbourhood, developed through a partnership of the San Francisco Giants, Tishman Speyer, and the Port of San Francisco. The 23-storey mixed-use residential complex on San Francisco's waterfront, which includes 283 apartments and two floors of offices, is MVRDV’s first completed project on the west coast of the United States.
Presenting alongside Tishman Speyer Managing Director Robert Pratt, the pair will discuss a project which references Californian rock formations, featuring its namesake landscaped public canyon which cuts diagonally through the building’s plinth, connecting to the offices and to shared amenities for residents. On 25 September MVRDV will then discover if the Canyon has won either of the overall prizes for which it is shortlisted at the CTBUH awards ceremony.
Frans de Witte joined MVRDV in 1996 and, being Americas studio director, he is currently leading projects in the Netherlands, the USA, Canada and South America. Frans has executed many successful MVRDV projects, such as Silodam, the Radio Tower and Hotel in Manhattan, the sustainable office and laboratory complex Matrix 1 in Amsterdam.
He is currently leading projects in the Netherlands, the USA, Canada and South America, including six residential towers ranging from 92 to 143 metres in Ecuador, the Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH) at the University of Toronto, a mixed-use project at the Enterprise Research Campus adjacent to Harvard Business School, and a masterplan for affordable housing in Boston.
