How does MVRDV respond to climate change in its design?
On 19 October Architect Ievgeniia Koval will discuss MVRDV's approach to carbon-conscious architecture at the Design & Architecture Summit, hosted by the Ukrainian Design and Innovation Week and Pragmatika Media. Illustrated through project anecdotes, Ievgeniia will share the practice's insights, from interpreting the Paris Agreement through to address the need for technical innovations to reduce carbon emissions. Through such projects as Matrix ONE, the fully demountable laboratory and office building which incorporates sustainable thinking at every angle, Seoullo 7017 Skygarden, which transformed and reused an existing road structure to create an urban park featuring tens of thousands and plants, and Shenzhen Women and Children's Centre, which resulted in a carbon saving equivalent to nearly 12,000 flights from Amsterdam to Shenzhen, Ievgeniia will also provide realistic insights into how architecture can be made sustainable in the conditions of post-war construction.
Ievgeniia joined MVRDV in 2018, and is currently leading the interior development of Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence (IPAI) in the Interiors Studio. Her work has principally been focused on residential and public projects, including Matrix ONE, The Sax, and Nieuw Bergen in the Netherlands, Ziel in Germany, and Fanueil Gardens and The Canyon in the United States. Ievgeniia holds a master's degree in architecture from the Kyiv National University of Architecture and Construction, and driven by a passion for sustainability pursued a second master's degree at KU Leuven (Belgium), graduated with an M.Arch in Resilient and Sustainable Strategies. Prior to MVRDV, Ievgeniia gained international experience at a number of architecture practices in Germany.
