Lorenzo Mattozzi, Associate and Architect at MVRDV, will present a lecture at the "Smart Cities? Sustainability and Quality of Living in Smart Cities" conference in Pisa, Italy on November 19th. Part of the annual “3 Giorni in Ordine” event organized by the Pisa Chamber of Architects, the conference brings together leading voices each year to explore new aspects of architecture and urban design. This year’s focus on sustainability and livability in smart cities will include Lorenzo, who will speak on the event’s second day.

Titled “Redefining urban identity: the transformative MVRDV projects of Bordeaux and Tirana,” Lorenzo’s lecture will explore MVRDV’s innovative and intelligent approaches to urban and architecture design through the studio’s work in Bordeaux and Tirana. These cities, with their roots as pivotal Roman and Illyrian sites, are reimagined through MVRDV’s projects, which seamlessly weave the existing urban fabric with innovative design and forward-thinking ambitions.

In Bordeaux, the Bastide-Niel Masterplan, encompassing projects such as Ilot Queyries, La Vallée Verte, and Le Grand Magasin, exemplifies MVRDV’s vision for harmonizing new urban layers with the city’s industrial heritage. The result is a future-ready neighborhood that thoughtfully balances social and environmental priorities, creating a more human-centered approach to mixed-use and high-density urban spaces.

In Tirana, iconic projects like the Pyramid of Tirana, Downtown One, Skanderbeg Tower, and Tirana Boulevard illustrate how design can channel the aspirations of a nation and its capital into a renewed, vibrant and contemporary identity.

Through this lecture, Lorenzo will delve into MVRDV’s data-driven methodologies and strategies that enhance urban and architectural spaces, making them more dynamic, inclusive, sustainable, and adaptive. These transformative projects demonstrate architecture’s potential to reshape urban identity, fostering spaces that connect communities and inspire ambitious urban futures.

At MVRDV, Lorenzo leads projects within the DAS Studio, focusing on mixed-use developments, urban integration, and social connectivity, particularly in Germany. Since joining the firm in 2017, he has played a key role in realizing major projects in Asia, particularly in China. Prior to MVRDV, Lorenzo gained extensive international experience at architectural firms in Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Brazil. His leadership reflects his diverse expertise in architectural design, project development, and sustainability.
