Lorenzo Mattozzi, Associate and Architect at MVRDV, will showcase the Shenzhen Women and Children's Centre at the International High-Rise Award, organised by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) in Frankfurt, Germany, on November 13th. Held biennially since 2004, the International High-Rise Award is co-hosted by the City of Frankfurt am Main, DAM, and DekaBank, recognising outstanding achievements in high-rise architecture worldwide. This year, the Women and Children's Centre is among the five finalists, joined by MVRDV’s Valley, from a field of 31 nominated buildings across 13 countries.
The award honours a building that excels in sustainability, exterior design, internal spatial quality, and social impact: qualities clearly embodied by the Women and Children's Centre in Shenzhen. This adaptive reuse project, created through a public-private partnership between the Women’s Federation of China and Shum Yip Group Ltd, benefits not only these stakeholders, but also the city and community of Shenzhen. Offering both public and private spaces, indoors and outdoors, it creates a welcoming environment for children and families and has quickly become an iconic landmark and a point of reference within Shenzhen.
The award ceremony will take place on the evening of November 12th at the Paulskirche, and Lorenzo’s presentation on November 13th will precede the opening of an exhibition at the Museum Angewandte Kunst. The public exhibition, running from November 14th to January 12th, will feature display panels detailing the project’s highlights and a specially constructed 1:500 scale model of the Women and Children's Centre.
Lorenzo leads projects within MVRDV’s DAS Studio, focusing on mixed-use developments, urban integration, and social connectivity, particularly in Germany. Since joining MVRDV in 2017, he has been instrumental in delivering significant projects, especially in China. With prior experience in Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Brazil, his leadership embodies expertise in architectural design, project development, and sustainable practices.
