Valley, which comprises three towers of 67, 81, and 100 metre and features spectacular cantilevered apartments together with offices, shops, and cultural facilities, is a finalist for the International High-Rise Award taking place on 12 November. Organised by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM), Stadt Frankfurt am Main, and DekaBank, MVRDV features twice in the five shortlisted projects, also being represented by the Shenzhen Women and Children's Centre. Joining a shortlist of five from 31 nominated projects, among many other awards Valley received the 2021 Emporis Skyscraper Award for the world's best new skyscraper.
On 13 November director and architect Sven Thorissen will present Valley prior to the opening of an exhibition featuring the nominated projects at Frankfurt’s Museum Angewandte Kunst. This public exhibition, running from November 14 to January 12, will feature display panels detailing the highlights and a model of Valley.
The award honours a building that combines exemplary sustainability, outer shape, and internal use of space and takes full consideration of social and urban planning-related aspects in order to create an exemplary design, with further criteria including innovative engineering and cost-effectiveness. These factors are epitomised by Valley, with a custom computational workflow enabling the design, standardisation, and successful installation of more than 40,000 stone tiles for its façade, while the building's energy performance is 30% better than local regulations require.
Director and Architect Sven Thorissen currently oversees MVRDV’s Das Studio, explicitly focused on growing the office’s profile and portfolio in Germany. Thorissen returned to MVRDV in early 2019 after a 12 year-hiatus, a considerable period of which he was working as Concept Developer for Proper Stok and Strategic Advisor Spatial Development, Economy and Sustainability for the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn. He leverages this broad range of experience with private and public organizations, across architectural design, project development, and sustainability in his studio leadership.
