Is architecture (not) art?

On 9 May, Head of Interior Aser Giménez-Ortega will reflect on this question at the third Arhitekta Forum in Belgrade, and the relationship, contrasts, and synergies between architecture and interior design. Referencing the practice's work, including the Depot Boijmans van Beuningen and a range of façades for Tiffany & Co., Aser will ask how we can design architecture and interiors that are not only art(istically pleasing), but also practical, functional, and sustainable in terms of materiality. Aser will also explain how this applies to transformations, such as the Pyramid of Tirana, and how we look more broadly to deliver projects that are more social, more green, and more welcoming.

Head of Interior Aser Giménez-Ortega oversees the work of MVRDV's Interiors specialists. Having joined MVRDV in 2007 after working as an architect and urban designer in Spain, Brazil, and elsewhere in the Netherlands, he has extensive experience leading projects of various scales and phases, ranging from masterplans to interior design and from concept to construction. Aser played an integral role in the conceptualisation, realisation, and management of Oslo’s DNB bank headquarters, as well as Shanghai’s Hongqiao Flower Building. Aser has also been responsible for a range of interior and retail projects both in Europe and in Asia, including Tiffany & Co.'s stores in Shanghai Taikoo Li, China, and Singapore Changi Airport.
