Two projects by MVRDV have been selected to receive regional awards from the Prix Versailles. The Chongwenmen M·CUBE in Beijing was awarded the Special Prize for Exterior Design in the Shopping Malls category for the Central Asia and the Northeast region, while the Bulgari flagship store in Kuala Lumpur also received a Special Prize for Exterior Design, this time in the Shops & Stores category in South Asia and the Pacific.
Both projects display MVRDV’s commitment to material innovation. The Bulgari store features a composite of concrete and resin that mimics the appearance of marble, with the marble’s ‘veins’ lighting up in a golden glow. The façade of the Chongwenmen M·CUBE is made with ceramic tiles with a pearlescent finish so that the building changes colour depending on the light conditions, from a subtle grey to a shimmering rainbow.
The awards will be given on September 12th in the Prix Versailles’ 2019 World Awards Ceremony at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
