MVRDV and TOPOTEK 1 win masterplanning guidelines for Berlin Tegel Airport Transformation

undefined

Berlin TXL will be an exemplary environment for sustainable high tech industries: an international centre for innovation with research oriented universities, global technology firms and start-ups located around the former terminal buildings of the airport. Based on a participatory workshop process involving six leading urban planning offices, the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development has, since 2009, developed an urban master plan for the transformation and re-use of Tegel Airport envisioning the zoning of the area in terms of usage and urban development prospects. In preparation for the further development of the "Urban Tech Republic“, Tegel Projekt GmbH released a tender for the development of design guidelines, which was won by TOPOTEK 1 and MVRDV in May 2013.

The urban design guidelines will be developed based on the earlier work by the six urban planning offices, which included MVRDV and TOPOTEK 1. Tegel Projekt GmbH envisions creating a framework for high quality urban development by creating a set of design and masterplan guidelines, in order to highlight the innovative, technology focussed profile through creative means, and create a unique identity for the area.
