The Markthal's cablenet facade, designed by MVRDV in collaboration with specialist contractors Octatube, has received the Benelux Trophy for Thermally Galvanised Steel 2015, in the category Characteristic Steel Elements. The biennial trophy, which celebrates innovation in the galvanised steel industry and the creation of exception buildings, is awarded by the trade association for thermally galvanised steel in Benelux. An award ceremony was held at the Eye Film Museum in Amsterdam to award the prizes on May 28th, with the Markthal beating a total of 119 other entries accross six categories. The Markthal will now be published along with the other entries in a commemorative book.
The jury said: "A building that in its form and function is already unique and striking appearance, has a very special detail to hand. The glass end walls had to be as transparent as possible. To achieve this, [they] have achieved the largest cable network facades in Europe. The jury was impressed by the cast nodes [which connect the grid of steel cables] and the slenderness of the galvanized steel and the allowable distortion [of the facade] in extreme wind." The innovative facade was necessary to realise the concept of a Markthal with an open air feeling, but an indoor environment.
