Markthal has been named the winner of the winner of the NRW Year Award. The jury sees in the Market Hall as a potential icon the retail real estate sector for its success in regenerating the surrounding Laurenskwartier and bringing visitors there from around the Netherlands and internationally. "The project was developed with courage and guts and responds to the changing demands of the property market" the jury said. The Markthal has won numerous prizes already since opening in October 2014, not least in the property sector, including the prestigious MIPIM 2015 Award for best retail building, and the NEPROM Award 2015 for regeneration of a district. The Markthal recently received its 8 millionth visitor, far surpassing even the highest estimate of 7.5 million visitors in its first year. Furthermore, all of the apartments in the building have now been sold.

Markthal was recently featured in an article in the Financial Times, 'Will Rotterdam’s Markthal be equivalent of Bilbao’s Guggenheim?' by Paul Miles, which compared the building's enormous effect on the city of Rotterdam's image and the resulting tourist numbers to Frank Gehry's now infamous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. "A visit to Rotterdam’s new market hall will make you feel like you’ve drunk a potion in Wonderland." Miles writes. "Rotterdam is experiencing a surge in visitors since its new Markthal, the first covered market hall in the Netherlands, opened in October 2014."
