MVRDV will have a strong presence at the 2025 Bangkok Design Week, which takes place from February 8th–23rd. The Dutch firm is participating with two installations – including one at the very heart of the city – as well as a public lecture from founding partner Winy Maas.

The first of these events will run from February 13th until the 15th. In the space under the Sirat Expressway at Surawong Road, MVRDV has teamed up with We!Park to present PROMPT PARK - a series of AI images that reimagine this leftover area. The images were produced in anticipation of a transformation of the space, initiated by the Dutch Embassy in Thailand, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT), as part of the city’s pocket park programme. Over 50 images were created using prompts generated by MVRDV, We!Park, participants in a workshop at the Dutch Embassy, and contributors via the Prompt Park app, showing the potential of participatory urban design in creating inclusive, sustainable public spaces that contribute to the city’s green and blue infrastructure.
The second installation by MVRDV takes place at the heart of Bangkok Design Week, opening on February 15th at the Lan Khon Mueang Town Square outside city hall until the end of the design week. The Mega Mat tells a story of plastic waste and recycling in Thailand. It celebrates the versatility of recycled plastic by transforming it into a local household product, the ‘Sua’, a mat on which Thai families have been sitting for generations. Over 500 modular pieces come together to make a supersized Sua for the whole city.
The Mega Mat is lifted on one corner to share information, while the remainder of the 860-square-metre installation is free for people to sit on and enjoy the Lan Khon Mueang plaza as their outdoor living room. The bright colours of this Mega Mat form an infographic display of how plastic waste is currently disposed of in the country, while also referencing the colours of the Wat Suthat Thepwararam, a temple located behind the plaza. At the end of Bangkok Design Week, the modular mats will be dismantled and given a third life.
Finally, at 11.00 on February 15th, MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas will present his lecture "People, Places, and Architecture" in the Central Convention Hall at Silpakorn University. Sign up for the lecture here.
