First look at MVRDV’s “Green Cathedral” for Van Gogh Homeland in Tilburg

In spring 2026, a striking green structure will emerge in Tilburg’s Spoorzone: the Green Cathedral, designed by MVRDV. This large-scale temporary installation—a green reinterpretation of Tilburg’s Heuvel Church—will serve as the centrepiece of Van Gogh Homeland, a new biennial exploring the future of Brabant’s landscape through art, design, and public engagement.

Curated by MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas, the first edition of Van Gogh Homeland focuses on major environmental and urban challenges in Brabant, the homeland of Vincent van Gogh. Built using a scaffolding structure and greenery, the Green Cathedral will act as a platform for discussions and events that address sustainability, greening, and climate adaptation. Visitors will be able to explore these themes through interactive exhibits and art installations, including a “green sky walk” that offers new perspectives – both literal and figurative – on the future of Tilburg, Brabant, and cities in general.

“The Green Cathedral is an expression of the dream to combine the upcoming densification of Brabant – a result of its location, its potential, and its ambition – with a radical greening” says MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas.

The project is a collaboration between the City of Tilburg, the Province of North Brabant, Midpoint Brabant, and partners such as the Efteling and Libéma. After the event, the vegetation from the cathedral will be replanted across the city, contributing to Tilburg’s ongoing greening efforts.

The Green Cathedral is the first in a series of experiences planned for Van Gogh Homeland, each exploring how to create a more sustainable and livable environment. The project is an initiative of the Van Gogh Homeland Foundation and is part of the Central Brabant Region Deal.
