Buro Happold Rotterdam
MVRDV designed the office interior for engineering consultancy Buro Happold in the Groothandelsgebouw, next to Rotterdam’s central station. Buro Happold is an international engineering and consultancy firm known for integrated design approaches that combine structural, environmental and urban expertise. Their work often focuses on collaboration between disciplines and on creating sustainable, high-performing built environments. The office design translates this collaborative working culture into a spatial organisation that supports exchange, flexibility and collective activity.

The office is located in the Groothandelsgebouw, one of Rotterdam’s most iconic post-war buildings by Dutch architect Hugh Maaskant. Completed in 1953, the building was conceived as a “vertical city” for commerce, accommodating companies of different sizes within a large and flexible structural framework. The industrial character and modular organisation have allowed the building to continuously adapt to new tenants and changing working models over time. Within this context, the new Buro Happold office occupies an L-shaped floor plate that is organised to maximise openness while creating clearly defined zones for different types of work.
The interior design can accommodate up to 72 workstations arranged in open work areas along the perimeter of the floor. Situated next to the windows, these workspaces benefit from daylight and views while maintaining proximity to shared facilities. Around the central area of the office several meeting rooms provide spaces for focused collaboration. Five four-people meeting rooms are positioned adjacent to the central space, while a larger boardroom accommodates meetings for up to sixteen people. Additional informal, flexible spaces include a lounge and a central open kitchen that function as social anchors within the office environment. The design also addresses new working patterns by incorporating six individual booths for online meetings and video calls, allowing staff to participate in remote collaboration without disturbing the open workspace.
At the centre of the layout sits the main spatial element of the office: the Agora. Inspired by the public gathering space of the ancient Greek city, the Agora functions as a shared place for meeting, discussion and collective activity. In the office it takes the form of a circular structure that integrates seating, tables and planters. The configuration allows the space to adapt to different uses – including informal work, shared lunches, presentations, internal gatherings or social events. The stepped seating can function as a small tribune for group discussions, while the surrounding counters provide places for short meetings or laptop work. The Agora can host multiple activities, from communal dining to presentations or informal gatherings.
Material choices reinforce the identity of this central space. The Agora is finished in a distinctive lime green tone, inspired by Buro Happold’s logo, and integrated with planting, creating a soft and recognisable centre within the office. The greenery introduces a biophilic element that improves spatial quality and contributes to a relaxed atmosphere for gathering and informal interaction. Surrounding meeting rooms and phone booths are finished in natural beige and brown tones and wooden wall panels, giving these spaces a warm and calm character that maintains a coherent material palette across the office. The general floor and open workspaces are finished in a very light grey tone that relates to the character of the Groothandelsgebouw and creates a neutral background for the potential new future elements.
Through its lay-out, the design balances concentration, collaboration and social interaction. The central Agora encourages spontaneous exchange and collective moments, while the surrounding meeting rooms, booths and workspaces support focused work and structured meetings. The result is an office environment that reflects Buro Happold’s collaborative engineering culture while adapting the historic Groothandelsgebouw to modern ways of working.
