Today, a majority of the world’s population lives in cities close to the sea. What challenges does this mean due to climate changes and the rising sea level? What can architecture do in these matters? How can it literally absorb these urgencies? And can it thus regain one of its possible agendas? The exhibition illustrates global issues and the challenges they pose for architects and urbanists. With newspaper headlines and other media, topics - or urgencies - are explored, together with MVRDV's visions, studies, and buildings as possible solutions - or escapes.
Projects included in the exhibition were Xinjin Water City (2007), Pampus Harbour Almere (2007), Splendid Isolation (2007), New Orleans Lower 9th Ward, Boijmans Art Depot (2007), The Hill (2006), Lagoon City (2006), Kampen Floodplains (2005), Ypenburg Masterplan (1998-2005), The Dubai Canal (2006), Climax (2003-2004), Silodam (2003), NYC 2012 Olympics (2003), Boz sur Mer (2002), Mandela Bridge (2001 and Port City Rotterdam (2000)
