Shenzhen 3D Street
Hua Qiang Bei Street is the centre of an emerging shopping area that needs to be revitalized and given a new and fresh identity. Also the development of the area should benefit from the new brand that will be part of this redevelopment. MVRDV proposed a series of interventions into the urban fabric to improve the experience of the area, the most significant of which is the pedestrianisation of the street.

MVRDV's proposal is to free Hua Qiang Bei Street from traffic. The streets crossing Hua Qiang Bei, like Zhenxing Road and Zhenzhong Road, will be put underground at the crossing. At the sides of the crossings stops will be integrated that provide drop off for taxi. In the central street crossing with Zhenhua Road, the sunken plaza will be combined with the entrances to the metro. A 3 layer deep crossing emerges. Off course stairs and escalators will be provided. On the parallel streets on both sides, all the destination traffic like entrances to parking and entries for employees will be made.
Bus lines will pass in a zigzag way, with bus stops at the underground crossings. The parallel streets, like Zhonghang Road, Huafa Road and Yannan Road, together with the perimeter roads, will take over the through-traffic which was to make use of the main street. To give the street a more urban feeling, three special buildings will be put more at the forefront of the street, thus giving Hua Qiang Bei two new beginnings and a heart. This allows the Hua Qiang Bei Street to be able to become a modern Champs Elysee that has almost the same length.
The Arc, The Dome, The Cone. There will be two zones, next to the pedestrian street containing all the grand magazines, and therefore the neighbouring businesses should be bigger scale type. The second line of businesses should be smaller in scale, including high end brand stores. This is the ideal environment in the aligning street to be developed into mega-store businesses.
Overall the grid will be filled with a diversity of buildings. The block sizes are about 1hactor. Each block will be one typology, like tower, factory, superblock, village, or open space. The Hua Qiang Bei will on both sides be aligns with a double line of trees, taking up existing palm trees, providing the necessary shadow to the pedestrian road. At the both beginnings and in the middle, sunken plazas connect upper and lower levels, providing access to several levels of shopping and metro. The new iconic buildings that are here, have media facades that allow an electronic feeling like Broadway in New York. The middle building even provides a half roof. The Amphitheatre like plazas can be used for events and concerts.
All along the street solar panels and or transparent glass with PV-cells will be used to provide the energy for the media facades and the media pavilions that align Hua Qiang Bei Street.
LED screen will be used to save the energy and heart emission.
Palm tree, open green space and green roof will be good for local climate.
Bring daylight to underground space could reduce cooling load from lighting.
Use natural ventilation for underground space.
Cool incoming air with groundwater and create draft by black solar chimneys. The chimneys should preferrably be black and extend up to 15 meter above the street level. A chimney with a area of 2m2 at every 50 m will be placed in the street.
